Our Unique Mission
Who are we? We are a community of students from around the world who are passionate about making the world a better place, one story at a time.
Like other newspapers, we chase stories; however, unlike other newspapers, we are a team of students who seek the good news that gets ignored by other journalists today. Our team is committed to spreading uplifting stories and news that brings people together in our increasingly divided world. This article explains how we are organized.
The Editorial Board
The Editorial Board serves as the leadership for our organization. Each member of the Editorial Board is considered an officer. Each officer has a different set of duties to make the paper function well.
The President is the Editor-in-Chief who oversees the newspaper and must be able to effectively inspire and lead The Monarch Ranger. As the paper’s leader, the President should have prior experience in running the newspaper, particularly as the previous managing editor. Our president also acts as the Assignment Editor, who selects, assigns, and plans the topics and articles for our newspaper.
The Managing Editor leads the day-to-day events of the newspaper. Their job is to oversee the website and majority of article editing. This position requires strong leadership and is equivalent to vice president. The Managing Editor assists the President with the overall vision and direction of The Monarch Ranger.
The Regional Editors manage and edit the articles that cover their region. The regional editor must be able to effectively inspire and motivate their team to meet deadlines. They must also have good organizational skills as they will have to submit their team’s articles for the final edit by the Managing Editor.
The Business Managers manage our online presence. They oversee our grants and advertising campaigns to promote The Monarch Ranger.
Staff Writers
Staff Writers contribute articles that are reviewed and published by The Monarch Ranger. Students can join at any time of the year, but must have their first article published on our website to officially become a staff writer. Once this is completed, they will officially become a Staff Writer for The Monarch Ranger. Staff Writers are required to write a minimum of five articles per year. Each writer can exercise their creativity and can assist in the selection of topics for their articles. We hope to recruit Staff Writers to write about activities and topics in which they are interested. Staff Writers are not yet members of the Editorial Board, but being a Staff Writer is a prerequisite for all of the officer positions.
Expectations of Membership
The Monarch Ranger looks for dedicated writers with a passion for reporting on issues in their lives. The Editorial Board, which is composed of our officers, is responsible for reviewing the articles of the Staff Writers and publishing them. Each member of the Editorial Board must contribute a minimum of ten articles per school year. Each staff writer must write a minimum of five articles per school year. During the first year, their article count includes the first article they published to become a Staff Writer.
Article Selection
We encourage brainstorming and ideas from all our members regarding the topics that we write about. Our issues or newsletters are all themed, so each week we focus on writing articles that fall under that week’s theme. All our members are encouraged to input their own ideas for article topics. However, like professional newspapers, we assign each of our writers the topics for articles they are expected to write. This task is done by our Editor-in-Chief, who acts as our Assignment Editor. We do our best to take the writer’s interests into account when assigning articles.
Meetings
We meet monthly to share updates on our articles and to review assignments. This is also when the Editorial Board will discuss upcoming projects and plan out work for The Monarch Ranger. We also discuss and share ideas for how to improve our writing skills. It is expected that members of the Editorial Board attend all meetings. Staff writers are not required to attend, but are encouraged to do so.
Dedication to Ethics
The Monarch Ranger seeks to provide an opportunity for student writers to contribute to the community in their own special way. In the fulfillment of this mission, plagiarism and other unethical behavior is not tolerated and will result in expulsion from the newspaper staff. Violating lesser rules of The Monarch Ranger, including not fulfilling the article requirements, skipping meetings, or not abiding by our standards will also be taken seriously. By joining our organization, you are agreeing to abide by our standards for ethics and moral character.
