BANGLADESH – Science has undeniably paved the way to the world we know today. Everything we see around us, from large factories to self-driving cars, are just some examples of using science for mankind’s benefit. As our understanding of the world continues to expand, raising interests among people, especially in youths, is a must. Science fair helps to encourage young minds to be inspired to creatively use their skills while showcasing their ideas. With encouragement from teachers and adequate supplies, students can show their potential and help make a positive impact in their lives and in the lives of others.
Our future relies on our young generation. The students studying in schools today will one day be the leaders of tomorrow. From this perspective, prioritizing the well-being and education of the youth is crucial. The main aim of schools around the world is to provide a safe environment for the flourishing of children. It lets the child explore his own merits and learn new things. However, many educational institutions today focus solely on theoretical knowledge and academic success, which consequently leaves the child with no way to express himself or show his creativity.
Science fairs are essentially an outlet for youth to rekindle their love for knowledge and bring out their innovative abilities. Typically, groups are made among the students participating. Each group is encouraged to pick a topic on which they would prefer to work. After a topic is selected, research is conducted by the students in light of their hypothesis. The final result is displayed on school grounds where youths are asked about their projects, many of which are accompanied with informative posters and hand-made leaflets.

While working on science projects, students learn to multitask, lead and co-ordinate with their groups. They develop communication skills and social values while working together. Someone could also discover a new hobby they might have not known they enjoyed in the process. They acquire new skills to present and explain their project in a clear and concise way. While conducting experiments, questions are asked by them which lead to a systematic way to look for answers.
Another important aspect of science fairs is its practical aspect. Instead of reading books and watching different things being made on videos, students are able to get hands-on experience, something which is impossible to get from theory alone. This lets students know basics about the topic and sparks an interest among them to further pursue their fields of interest. Researching on topics also helps to develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
The best part of a science fair for many is certainly the final prize. Prizes are generally given out according to the position of the student in the fair and can range from school supplies, crests, certificates and even money. This serves as a great motive for youths to take part in the science fair.
Many schools, especially in third-world countries, are unable to host science fairs due to insufficient funding or unavailability of supplies. Initiatives should be taken to provide these schools necessary equipment, all the while encouraging children to participate in the science fair. Aside from academics, extra-curricular activities like science fairs help prepare youths to tackle the many challenges they will come to face in life.
