TAIPEI, TAIWAN – Maternity nurses at the Ma Cherie Maternity Centre in Taipei, Taiwan worked quickly to protect the tiny newborn babies in the nursery. CTV footage showed how the nurses rushed to gather the bassinets into the middle of the room and held them steady as the earthquake rocked the city.
Many others found their actions inspiring, calling the nurses “brave” and were moved by the footage that showed their “beautiful” heroic acts.
The supervisor of the Maternity center told Reuters, “Of course we were scared, very scared, but I think this is the natural instinct of a maternity staff,” and that they believed “the safety of the babies is of utmost importance.” While some might have let this fear stop them from leaping into action, these nurses showed true bravery and courage.

One user posted: “Many videos show the impact of the earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday. I found this hospital one especially touching, showing nurses rushing to keep all the babies safe. Life is fragile, and they're doing all they can to protect the most fragile ones of all. Bless them🙏” – Manya Koetse @manyapan
Just as this earthquake shines a light on the heroic acts of these nurses, it also shows us how prepared Taiwan was for this earthquake. Compared to the last earthquake of this magnitude in 1999, Taiwan experienced significantly less devastation in the aftermath. This is because the people of Taiwan enacted campaigns to reinforce buildings and bridges to better prepare for future earthquakes. While there was still destruction from this earthquake, the decrease in damage compared to a similar earthquake 25 years earlier demonstrates how resilient people can be in the face of disaster. It shows that by working together, people can build a better future together!
