In July of 2022, a deadly pileup on a 91 freeway in Riverside, California sent motorcyclist Christopher Le flying through the air. He hit the collision head-on, and was tossed through the street by the impact. Video of the event showed a few cars and large trucks narrowly missing him as they sped past.
Bystander David Pride initially thought that Le was dead, but after he saw him move, he rushed to help.
The New York Post reported that Pride told ABC 7 after the incident that “I see he’s still moving, I know he’s alive… using my upper body strength, I just grabbed him, took him all the way to the side where it was clear,”
Thanks to Mr. Pride’s heroic act, Christopher will make a full recovery. He thanked Pride, saying “I just really want to thank you for, for doing what you did out there, for putting your life on the line, pulling me out of the road, man. I really appreciate it.”
This is a modern example of the classic Good Samaritan story. There were many other drivers who chose to pass by instead of helping the injured motorcyclist on the road. Some of them only narrowly missed running Mr. Le over. However, David Pride chose to stop and help a man whom he had never met.
Out of kindness and compassion, Pride stepped up to help someone in great need. It can really make us think about what we would have done in this situation. Would we have turned a blind eye to the situation, or would we have stopped and helped?
There is something special about people who risk their lives for the sake of others. As Simon Sinek, American author and business speaker once said, “It is a luxury to put our interests first. It is an honor to put the interests of others before our own.”
