Elderly Man Trapped in Flooded Car Saved by Good Samaritans

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian flooded cities along Florida’s coastline. With record-setting storm surges and winds at 150 mph, two million residents across Florida were left without power. Many people were stranded in their cars and houses with waist-deep water flooding everything in its path.

Amid all of this chaos, a few kind men came to the aid of an elderly man who was stranded in his car. The strength of the current had weighed the door shut making it impossible to escape from the inside of the car. One of the men, Benny from @colliercountycowboys, posted on Instagram about how Benny and his friends pried the door open and got the elderly man to safety.

“We saw an elderly man struggling in his car, and we knew he needed help.”

Benny and his friends could have stayed in the comfort of their homes and waited for someone else to take action. But instead, they helped a stranger in need who may have otherwise become a casualty.

It would have been extremely easy for them to give in to selfishness and to prioritize their own safety. No one would have blamed them if they stayed home instead of wading through the gushing water. It is dangerous for anyone to try to go into the streets when cars can be swept away by the floodwater.

However, Benny and his friends braved the storm and saved the life of a man, a stranger, in need. We can learn a lot about life when we follow the example of everyday heroes like Benny and his friends.

As American author Napoleon Hill once said, “great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness.” Helping someone else, even if we don’t know their name, can mean everything to someone you have never met.
